Competitions for Children

Back to Primary Education

Hi All,

First introduce my self. I'm Sreenadh, working in bangalore.

We(Me and my friends) intend to conduct a competition or quiz (what ever one may call) for the school childern including private and govt schools.

First i will tell why the idea came and the purpose of this.

We small group of people used to visit to govt schools because of our urge to understand the naunces of primary education and what ails our education sector. As part of our visits, we used to teach the childern some basic science and maths through activites and provoke them to think innovatively and career counsilling. While in our interactions with them, we observed that some of them are belittling themselves by comparing them with the better
privileged children(private school). This notion of private school childeren are intelligent and govt school childs are deprived is cause of conern.

So we got an idea to conduct a competition. What iam proposing now is not panacea but an initivative that gives them confidence that they too can compete and succeed and what really matters is determination.

The theme of competion is not to assess the intelligence or content he mugged up in school but create a platform in which every child irrespective of his economic or social background will be given a chance to compete, compete with better privileged. The idea is simply to test the fact "Every child has

intelligence and potential to excel, given the opportunity he will". For this we shall try to test keenness or observation, a measure of smartness rather than Content/information in which a better privileged has always some advantage. At the same time competition should serve to bring familiarity among students about competition and develop a general interest.

So in this regard i want comments from all of you about the idea of quiz/competition and suggestions about the different formats & content of quizzes

that meets our stated objective.

Thankyou..

hey great initiative and good thinking. You can actually start this program by having simple sports games/ competitions. Then you can start sharing knowledge program/competition and go to a quiz competition. This is to help them in getting to know you children better and also improving their confidence while competing.

Great Thinking, Good Idea!

As, you said there should be change in Educational Setup in India.

More importance is given to the degrees a teacher has, not his way of teaching.

For testing keeness, teach him first and test him

for testing smartness, give a common problem, look for a common sense answer

A quiz competition can be implemented. This competition can be carried out on the basis of maths, science and history.

The questions could be very interactive rather than boring. For example: Who invented the first computer? who is considered as the father of evolution ? how many bones does an adult human have ? etc.
