TNERC plans circuit court

  • Consumers need not travel long distances for simple problems

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission is considering making the electricity ombudsman in the State a “Circuit Court” so that consumers do not have to travel long distances for simple problems, secretary of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission R. Balasubramanian told ‘The Hindu’ in Coimbatore on Friday February 26, 2010.

Forum
Complaints related to new service connection, billing, replacement of meter, shifting of service or meter, name transfer, change of tariff and response to complaints were handled by the Consumer Grievances Redressal Forum. The State had 39 such forums. The forums had to dispose of the cases received by them within 60 days.

Ombudsman
Consumers could appeal to the ombudsman either against the forum or if the forum does not dispose of the case within 60 days. The ombudsman settled the cases in three months.

The ombudsman received 75 appeals so far this year and, except one, all the cases were settled. Mr. Balasubramanian explained that in general, electricity consumer problems were mainly related to theft of energy, unauthorised use of power, and grievance regarding services.
