Fodder Cultivation

Back to வேளாண்மை- கருத்து பகிர்வு மேடை

I am from Tiruvarur district.I am planning to start a small scale dairy farm and goat rearing too. I want to cultivate CO1, CO3, Napier grass and Lucern. But, I have only rice cultivating lands. During raining season the above said fodders can thrive or grow in these lands? How to save these fodders from the flooded rain water? Is there any alternatives?

Generally the above mentioned fodder crops require soils with good drainage.
You can however try out on an experimental basis using the following tips
- Ensure adequate drainage by forming drainage channels around and in between the land where fodder is grown.
- Take up planting/sowing in ridges and furrows
- ensure that the crop is sown/planted during the dry season with support irrigation. There is a possibility of the established crop surviving water logging.
- Add adequate organic matter and take up proper tillage
